IGP des Collines Rhodaniennes

The IGP Collines Rhodaniennes occupies a singular place within the Rhône Valley vineyards. Located mainly in the northern part of the river, this protected geographical indication surrounds prestigious appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage or Saint-Joseph. Long perceived as a secondary zone, the Collines Rhodaniennes PGI has gradually asserted itself as a privileged territory of expression for wines with identity, precision and accessibility, often resulting from organic and environmentally-friendly practices.

.

The winegrowing history of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes is intimately linked to that of the Northern Rhône. Vines have been grown here since ancient times on steep hillsides shaped by generations of winegrowers. For a long time, these plots of land served as a complement to the more famous appellations, making it possible to enhance the value of land located on the outskirts of areas classified as PDO. The official recognition of the PGI has restored a distinctive identity to these terroirs, while offering greater creative freedom to the producers.

The vineyards of the L'Oréal region have a long tradition of producing quality wines.

The vineyards of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes are characterized by a great diversity of soils. Granite, schist, gneiss, clay and loess make up a complex geological ensemble, inherited from the Massif Central and Alpine influences. These poor, draining soils favor moderate yields and gradual ripening of the grapes. The altitude and varied exposures of the plots play a decisive role in the balance of the wines, bringing freshness and tension.

The climate of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes is predominantly continental, tempered by the influence of the Rhône. Summers are hot but rarely excessive, winters can be harsh, and temperature amplitudes between day and night are marked. The mistral wind, frequent in the valley, contributes to the natural sanitation of the vineyards and facilitates the development of organic viticulture.

The IGP Collines Rhodaniennes bio is growing steadily, driven by winemakers committed to a qualitative, sustainable approach. The configuration of the hillsides makes mechanization difficult, favoring precise, attentive manual work. Respect for the soil, limiting inputs, the absence of synthetic herbicides and the search for a natural balance in the vines have become pillars of organic production in this territory.

.

One of the major assets of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes lies in the diversity of authorized grape varieties. The emblematic grape varieties of the Northern Rhône, such as Syrah for reds and Viognier for whites, find a more accessible and often more immediate expression here than in neighboring appellations. Other grape varieties, such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Gamay or Pinot Noir, are also used, enabling a wide variety of styles.

The red wines of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes are distinguished by their freshness and aromatic legibility. Organic expressions favor elegant profiles, marked by red and black fruit aromas, floral notes and a touch of spice. On the palate, the structure is generally supple, with fine tannins and good tension, offering digestible, well-balanced wines capable of being enjoyed both young and after a few years of cellaring.

.

The white wines of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes occupy a growing place in production. Here, Viognier expresses a more airy, fresher face, with aromas of apricot, peach, white flowers and sometimes a mineral touch. Cuvées made from Marsanne or Roussanne add structure and depth, giving rise to gastronomic whites that are precise and elegant. Organic practices enhance aromatic purity and finesse of balance.

In the cellar, the winemakers of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes bio adopt grape-friendly vinifications. Fermentations are often carried out with indigenous yeasts, extractions are moderate to preserve the delicacy of the tannins, and maturation is adapted to the style sought. The use of wood is generally measured, leaving room for the expression of terroir and grape variety.

The wines of the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes fit naturally into a modern gastronomic approach. Their freshness, balance and accessibility make them particularly versatile at the table. The reds are the perfect accompaniment to grilled meats, simple dishes or seasonal cuisine, while the whites blend harmoniously with fish, poultry and vegetable preparations.

Today, the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, particularly in its organic expressions, embodies a contemporary and sincere vision of the Northern Rhône. It offers winemakers a space of freedom while promoting demanding and often spectacular terroirs. Thanks to the commitment of passionate producers and a constant move upmarket, the Collines Rhodaniennes PGI is establishing itself as an essential geographical indication for discovering organic wines that are precise, elegant and deeply rooted in their territory.

Domaine François Villard IGP Collines Rhodaniennes - Seul en Scene 2023

The Seul en Scène cuvée from domaine François Villard is a superb discovery. On the nose, the wine is an explosion of violets, directly announcing the Syrah. This is followed by notes of ripe fruit such as cherry and jammy strawberry. The palate is tender and suave with young but already velvety tannins.
