Mas Jullien

Le Mas Jullien in a few words...

Le Mas Jullien, located in Jonquières in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, is an emblematic Languedoc wine estate. Founded in 1985 by Olivier Jullien, this 18-hectare vineyard is recognized for its pioneering role in the qualitative revival of the region's wines. This article offers a detailed exploration of the estate's history, terroir, viticultural practices, emblematic cuvées and impact on Languedoc viticulture.

.

Olivier Jullien, heir to a family of winemakers, founded Mas Jullien in 1985, at a time when the Languedoc was mainly known for its mass-produced wines. Driven by an innovative vision, he sought to demonstrate the exceptional potential of the Languedoc terroir to produce high-quality wines. In collaboration with Jean-Philippe Granier, he set about restructuring the family vineyard, adopting environmentally-friendly growing practices and favoring limited yields to encourage concentrated aromas.

Le Mas Jullien covers 18 hectares spread over varied soils, including clay-limestone formations, silica and sandstone. This soil diversity, combined with an altitude ranging from 200 to 400 meters, gives Mas Jullien wines remarkable complexity and freshness. Grape varieties grown include Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah for reds, and Carignan blanc, Grenache blanc, Chenin, Viognier, Clairette and Petit Manseng for whites.

Olivier Jullien is renowned for his meticulous approach to viticulture, aiming to faithfully express the character of each plot. Although the estate has been certified organic in the past, he has chosen to stop claiming this certification in order to retain total freedom in his cultivation practices, while maintaining a profound respect for the environment. This philosophy translates into particular attention to soil health and biodiversity, essential elements in producing authentic, living wines.

Olivier Jullien's work at Mas Jullien has made a major contribution to the recognition of Terrasses du Larzac as a quality appellation. His commitment to respectful viticulture and the promotion of indigenous grape varieties has inspired many of the region's winemakers. Today, Mas Jullien is considered a benchmark, illustrating the Languedoc's potential to produce exceptional wines.

Mas Jullien embodies the successful alliance between tradition and innovation in the Languedoc wine landscape. Thanks to the vision and dedication of Olivier Jullien, the estate produces wines that express the diversity of their terroir with authenticity and finesse. This relentless quest for quality and sincerity makes Mas Jullien a must-visit address for lovers of great Languedoc wines.

Guide des meilleurs vins de France 2019 about Mas Jullien: "More than any other Languedoc winemaker, Olivier Jullien commands the respect and admiration of his peers. He is one of the main architects of the renaissance of rigorous viticulture in the region (...) Fresh, full-bodied reds, capable of shining for more than 15 years, but also a magnificent white that stands out from fashion, make this estate a benchmark"

The Mas Jullien cuvées

The red Autours de Joncquieres from Mas Jullien has great length and elegance. However, it is imperative to keep it for a few years (at least 7-8 years), as the wine often goes through a phase of closure in its youth.

The estate's Cuvée Carlan comes from vines located on schist and sandstone terroirs. The blend of grenache, syrah and carignan planted in the commune of Saint Privat produces a wine of rare complexity and ageing capacity.

The Mas Jullien white is astonishingly fresh and complex, with notes of white flowers, fennel and aniseed. Not to be missed. It's a pity that Mas Jullien wines are so rare!

Le rosé du Mas Jullien is a vinous, complex rosé that deserves 1 or 2 years of cellaring to reveal its full ambition.
