AOC Côtes de Bergerac

The AOP Côtes de Bergerac is one of the most structured and qualitative expressions of the Bergerac vineyards. Located in the Dordogne department, in the heart of the South-West, this protected designation of origin is in line with the historical and geographical continuity of the great wine-growing terroirs of the Dordogne basin. It brings together wines of character, predominantly red, recognized for their depth, balance and ageing potential, while today offering increasingly accomplished expressions from organic viticulture.

.

The history of the AOP Côtes de Bergerac is inseparable from that of the town of Bergerac and the Dordogne, a major trade route since the Middle Ages. From that time onwards, the wines produced on the slopes overlooking the river enjoyed a solid reputation, aided by their export to Bordeaux, England and Northern Europe. These hillsides, naturally better exposed and drained than the alluvial plains, were gradually identified as terroirs in their own right, giving rise to a specific appellation designed to enhance the value of more concentrated and structured wines.

The vineyards of the AOP Côtes de Bergerac extend over hillsides with moderate slopes, benefiting from favorable exposures and natural ventilation. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, sometimes mixed with gravel or sand, depending on the area. This geological diversity ensures excellent water regulation and favors even ripening of the grapes. The clays bring power and depth to the wines, while the limestones contribute to their freshness and balance.

The climate of the AOP Côtes de Bergerac is temperate oceanic, with marked continental influences. Summers are generally warm but not excessively so, autumns long and often favorable to full ripening of the grapes, and winters moderate. This climatic combination produces balanced wines, combining aromatic richness and freshness, while offering conditions conducive to the development of organic viticulture.

The AOP Côtes de Bergerac bio has been experiencing significant growth for several years. Many estates have embarked on a conversion to organic farming, convinced that this approach better reveals the typicity of terroirs and the intrinsic quality of grape varieties. Working the soil, limiting yields, abandoning synthetic inputs and careful observation of the vines are at the heart of this qualitative approach.

The wines of the AOP Côtes de Bergerac are predominantly red. They are based on traditional South-West and Bordeaux blends, dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc and sometimes Malbec. Merlot brings roundness, fruit and suppleness, while Cabernets add structure and ageing potential. Expressions from organic viticulture are often distinguished by greater aromatic precision and a more digestible texture.

.

The reds of AOP Côtes de Bergerac offer rich, expressive aromatic profiles. Notes of ripe black fruit, cherry, plum and blackcurrant mingle with aromas of spice, undergrowth and sometimes well-integrated woody touches. On the palate, the wines are full-bodied, with present but generally mellow tannins, and a freshness that balances the natural richness of the fruit. These characteristics give the wines a fine aptitude for ageing, enabling them to develop favorably over several years.

The appellation also produces dry and sweet white wines, more confidential but of great quality. The dry whites of AOP Côtes de Bergerac, made from grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, offer elegant aromatic profiles, blending citrus, white-fleshed fruit and floral notes. Sweet whites, from late harvest or partially botrytized grapes, are distinguished by their richness balanced by preserved natural acidity.

.

In the cellar, estates committed to the AOP Côtes de Bergerac bio favor precise vinifications that respect the raw material. Fermentations are often carried out with indigenous yeasts, extractions are adapted to the concentration of the vintage, and maturation is carried out in vats or barrels, with controlled use of wood. The aim is to preserve the expression of terroir and the natural balance of the wine.

The wines of the AOP Côtes de Bergerac are naturally part of a gastronomic tradition. Reds are ideal with roasted meats, stewed dishes and mature cheeses, while dry whites go harmoniously with fish, seafood and poultry. Mellow whites find their place as aperitifs or with fruity desserts.

Today, the AOP Côtes de Bergerac, particularly in its organic expressions, embodies an assertive move upmarket for Bergerac vineyards. Thanks to the richness of its terroirs, the mastery of its grape varieties and the growing commitment of its winegrowers to sustainable viticulture, the appellation offers wines that are structured, balanced and deeply rooted in their territory. It has thus established itself as an essential reference for discovering organic wines from the South-West, combining authenticity, depth and elegance.
