VDP du Gard

The IGP Gard embodies one of the most extensive and diverse expressions of the vineyards of southern France. Located in the Gard department, between the Rhône Valley, the Cévennes and the Mediterranean, this protected geographical indication covers a territory with multiple influences, both climatic and geological. Through its freedom of expression, growing commitment to organic viticulture and diversity of styles, the IGP Gard has established itself as a privileged space for wines that are sincere, accessible and deeply rooted in their territory.

The winegrowing history of Gard is ancient and closely linked to that of the Mediterranean basin. Vines have been grown here since ancient times, favored by the Roman presence and major trade routes such as the Via Domitia. Over the centuries, vineyards have grown up around villages and agricultural estates, giving lasting structure to the rural landscape. After the upheavals of the XXᵉ century, marked by overproduction and viticultural crises, the Gard vineyards embarked on a profound qualitative transformation, giving rise to a new dynamic embodied today by the IGP Gard.

The IGP Gard vineyards stretch over a vast and contrasting territory, from the coastal plains to the Cévennes foothills, via the limestone plateaus and alluvial terraces of the Rhône valley. This geographical diversity translates into a wide variety of viticultural situations, with altitudes ranging from sea level to over 400 meters. Exposures, topography and local climatic influences result in differentiated maturities and highly varied wine profiles.

The soils of the IGP Gard reflect this geological richness. They include limestone, marl, red clay, rolled pebbles and sandy formations. These soils, often poor and well-drained, encourage deep vine rooting and contribute to the balance and complexity of the wines. Chalky soils provide freshness and tension, while more clayey soils confer structure and roundness.

The climate of the IGP Gard is predominantly Mediterranean, marked by hot, dry summers and mild winters. However, continental influences from the north and the effects of altitude in some areas introduce beneficial coolness, particularly for white and rosé wines. Winds, particularly the Mistral and Tramontane, ensure natural ventilation of the vineyards, limiting disease pressure and favoring organic viticulture practices.

The grape varieties of the IGP Gard stand out for their great diversity, made possible by the flexibility of the specifications. For red and rosé wines, we find Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, but also grape varieties of international origin such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wines, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Vermentino, Roussanne and Marsanne are widely represented. This freedom allows winemakers to compose wines adapted to their terroirs and stylistic choices.

The red wines of the IGP Gard present a wide range of styles. Cuvées from warm areas offer aromas of ripe black fruits, spices and garrigue, with a generous, supple palate. Other expressions, from cooler terroirs or higher altitudes, favor finesse, freshness and balance, with more discreet tannins and good drinkability. This diversity is one of the PGI's major strengths.

The rosés of the IGP Gard are part of a growing qualitative approach. Crafted in a dry, precise style, they develop aromas of red fruit, citrus and flowers, with a fresh, thirst-quenching palate. Their structure makes them an easy match for Mediterranean and summer cuisine.

The white wines of the IGP Gard occupy an increasingly important place in production. Derived from terroirs that are often chalky and ventilated, they present elegant aromatic profiles, blending white-fleshed fruit, citrus and floral notes. The palate is distinguished by a balance between roundness and tension, with a fresh and sometimes saline finish, testifying to the influence of the soils.

Organic viticulture is a structuring axis of the IGP Gard. A significant proportion of the vineyard is now certified organic or in conversion, placing the Gard department among the most committed territories in the south of France. The dry, breezy climate facilitates these practices, while the environmental awareness of winegrowers reinforces this dynamic. Working the soil, reducing inputs and preserving biodiversity have become shared priorities.

In the cellar, winemaking practices within the IGP Gard favor precision and sincerity. Fermentations are often conducted with indigenous yeasts, interventions are limited, and the use of sulfur is reasoned. Ageing, in vats or barrels, is adapted to each cuvée, with the aim of preserving the expression of the fruit and the balance of the wine.

Food and wine pairings with IGP Gard wines reflect their great versatility. Red wines go equally well with grilled meats, simmered dishes, Mediterranean cuisine or spicy recipes. Whites go well with fish, seafood, cheese and vegetarian dishes. Rosés naturally find their place in convivial, summery contexts.

Today, the IGP Gard is asserting itself as a dynamic, rapidly evolving wine-growing region. Thanks to the diversity of its terroirs, the creative freedom offered to winemakers and the massive commitment to organic viticulture, it offers a modern, responsible interpretation of the wines of southern France, capable of appealing to connoisseurs and amateurs alike.
