Clos de la Barthassade

Le Clos de la Barthassade in a nutshell....

Hélène and Guillaume Barron have been running the Clos de la Barthassade since 2014, a vineyard they created in Aniane, in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac, next to the famous Grange des Pères.

Having worked their way up from sylvain Pataille in Burgundy, this talented winemaking couple produce fresh, easily digestible wines that are surprisingly well-balanced for the region. The Clos de la Barthassade vineyard is farmed organically, and certain tasks are governed by the biodynamic calendar.

Le Clos de la Barthassade currently covers 11 hectares of vines, in several communes, notably Montpeyroux, but also Jonquières and Saint-Saturnin. Everything is done here to develop life in and out of the soil.

"Clos de la Barthassade takes its origin from the Occitan "bartàs" meaning "bush, scrub" and refers to the bushy woodland bordering our plots in Montpeyroux." - Hélène & Guillaume BarronPrix de la Découverte de l'année 2017 "L'esprit bourguignon souffle sur le Larzac" (article by Olivier Poussier)

Trained in Burgundy, Hélène and Guillaume Baron settled in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac, armed with a fine ambition. They created the domaine ex-nihilo (the winery is in Aniane) and signed their first harvest in 2014. Clos de La Barthassade comprises 9.25 hectares of organically farmed red vines in the villages of Jonquières and Monpeyroux, and half a hectare of chenin in Saint-Saturnin. Guillaume Baron, with a BTS in viti-œno and a DTO from Dijon, worked at the Domaine de la Pousse d'Or in Volnay, and with Dominique Derain, a biodynamic winemaker in Saint-Aubin, before moving to the Domaine de Trévallon. For her part, Hélène worked with Sylvain Pataille in Marsannay.

Inspired by their professional experiences, Guillaume and Hélène craft infused, low-extract wines that respond well to the fresh dynamics of wines from the Terrasses du Larzac terroir.

Les cuvées du Clos de la Barthassade

The cuvée Pur C evokes a pure cinsault to be drunk without moderation: velvet in the bottle, with expressive fruit.

The cuvée H, on the other hand, is vinified and aged in eggs. and is predominantly Syrah: it has its characteristic notes of spice and red fruit.

Les Gravettes is a supple, fruity Terrasses du Larzac that can be drunk young until the cuvée les Ouvrées, which requires more time, is ready. It's one of our favorite Clos de la Barthassade cuvées.

The estate's whites are rare and of a high standard. The vermentino is expressive and gourmand, the cuvée Gargadous for its part is a lovely organic gourmet wine, bold and fresh at the same time, it's an outright success.

For thrill-seekers, you have to try the blanc de cinsault, a blanc de noir aged in a semi-oxidative environment by Clos de la Barthassade!

All Clos de la Barthassade red and white wines are certified organic.
