Bergerac PDO

AOP Bergerac in a few words

The Bergerac PDO, located in southwestern France, is an emblematic wine region offering a wide variety of red, dry white, sweet, rosé and even liqueur wines. Renowned for the richness of its terroirs and the quality of its grape varieties, the appellation is a true gem of the Dordogne Valley.

.

With a winemaking tradition that dates back to antiquity, Bergerac PDO winemakers combine ancestral know-how with modern innovation to produce wines that seduce with their authenticity and character. Many estates have adopted organic viticulture, respecting the environment while preserving the typicity of their terroirs.

The organic wines of Bergerac stand out for their generosity and balance. Whether it's a fleshy red, a mineral white or a delicate mellow, each wine expresses the unique identity of its terroir, making the Bergerac PDO an unmissable region for lovers of quality wines.

The Bergerac PDO covers around 12,000 hectares along the Dordogne valley, in the Dordogne department. This vast vineyard benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, influenced by the proximity of the river, which regulates temperatures and favors optimal ripening of the grapes.

The Bergerac terroir is one of the finest in France.

The Bergerac terroir is made up of a variety of soils, from clay-limestone to gravelly and sandy, offering a wide range of aromatic profiles to the wines. This geological richness enables winegrowers to cultivate different grape varieties adapted to each type of soil, contributing to the variety of wines produced under the appellation.

The vines also benefit from generous sunshine, which favors the production of grapes rich in sugar and aroma. These ideal conditions, combined with the hand-picking practiced on many estates, guarantee the exceptional quality of Bergerac PDO wines.

Whether it's the grapes or the grapes themselves, Bergerac is the place to be.

Whether powerful, structured reds, elegant dry whites or delicate mellows, Bergerac wines reflect the harmony between an exceptional terroir and ancestral winemaking know-how.

The AOP Bergerac is based on a selection of traditional grape varieties that give the wines their typicity and aromatic richness. These grape varieties, carefully cultivated with respect for the soil and the environment, enable the production of a wide variety of wines suited to all tastes.

For red and rosé wines:

Merlot: The dominant grape variety, it brings ripe red fruit, plum and licorice aromas to red wines, as well as a round, velvety texture.

Cabernet Sauvignon: Known for its powerful tannins, it produces structured wines with aromas of blackcurrant, pepper and sometimes mint.

Cabernet Franc: This grape adds finesse and freshness, with red fruit aromas and a slight herbaceous note.

Malbec (or Côt):

For white wines:

Sauvignon Blanc: Makes lively, aromatic dry white wines, with notes of citrus, boxwood and exotic fruit.

Sémillon: Used for dry and sweet whites, it gives wines a lovely roundness and aromas of honey and white flowers.

Muscadelle: This variety brings delicate floral and fruit aromas, with a slightly musky touch.

This diversity of grape varieties enables Bergerac's organic wines to offer an exceptional palette of flavors, from fleshy, spicy reds to fresh, fruity whites.

The Bergerac PDO is renowned for the diversity of its wines, which come in a range of styles suited to all occasions. Whether red, white, rosé or mellow, Bergerac wines seduce with their richness and balance.

Red wines:

Bergerac reds are often blends dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc or Malbec. They offer generous aromas of red and black fruits, sometimes accompanied by spicy, cocoa or licorice notes. On the palate, they stand out for their structure and length, perfect for accompanying red meats, dishes in sauce or mature cheeses.

.

Vibrant and aromatic, Bergerac PDO dry whites are mainly made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. They offer notes of citrus, white flowers and sometimes a refreshing minerality. These wines are ideal for seafood, grilled fish or salads.

Made from overripe grapes, often affected by noble rot, Bergerac moelleux are rich and complex, with aromas of honey, candied fruit and sweet spices. They pair perfectly with foie gras, fruity desserts or blue-veined cheeses.

.

Fresh and fruity, Bergerac rosés are perfect for summer. They offer aromas of red fruit, such as strawberry and redcurrant, with a lovely liveliness.
