AOC Sauternes

The Sauternes Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) is a French appellation designating sweet white wines produced in the Sauternes region, a wine-growing area south of Bordeaux in the Gironde. The appellation's production area is made up of five communes: Barsac, Bommes, Fargues, Preignac and Sauternes.

Sauternes is a unique wine, produced thanks to a natural phenomenon called noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. This rot, which is a grape disease, causes a concentration of sugars and aromas in the berries. The grapes are harvested by hand, in several passes, in order to select only those berries affected by noble rot.

Sauternes is an exceptional wine, distinguished by its richness, complexity and long life. It is typically served as a dessert or aperitif.
