.CloseThe Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Bourgogne is one of the most emblematic appellations of the Burgundy wine region in France. It covers a vast geographical area and represents an ideal gateway to discover the diversity and richness of Burgundy wines.
The Bourgogne PDO covers all the wine-growing regions of Burgundy, including the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise, the Mâconnais and even parts of the Chablisienne. This great geographical diversity translates into a variety of soils, climates and exposures, offering a palette of wines with varied characteristics. Soils are predominantly clay-limestone, but can also include marl, schist and sand, depending on the sub-region.
The red wines of the Bourgogne PDO are mainly made from the Pinot Noir grape variety. They are distinguished by their elegance, finesse and aromas of red fruits (cherry, raspberry) and black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), with floral and spicy notes. On the palate, these wines offer silky tannins, lovely freshness and balanced structure.
The white wines of the Bourgogne PDO are mainly produced from the Chardonnay grape. They are characterized by aromas of white fruit (apple, pear) and white flowers, with occasional notes of butter and brioche. On the palate, these wines are often round, balanced, with refreshing acidity and a mineral finish.
The Bourgogne PDO also includes rosé wines and sparkling wines (Crémant de Bourgogne), offering further diversity for wine lovers. Rosé wines, often made from Pinot Noir grapes, are fresh and fruity, while Crémants de Bourgogne, made according to the traditional method, are fine and elegant.
The AOP Bourgogne also includes sparkling wines (Crémant de Bourgogne), offering further diversity for wine lovers.
The Bourgogne PDO covers around 22,000 hectares of vineyards, spread across the entire Burgundy region. Annual production varies according to climatic conditions, but is generally around 1.5 million hectoliters, including all wine colors and styles. This large area allows for a wide variety of styles and qualities, from everyday wines to more prestigious crus.
.A growing number of producers in the Bourgogne PDO are adopting organic or biodynamic viticulture practices. These approaches aim to minimize environmental impact and preserve vineyard biodiversity. Practices include the use of natural composts, manual tillage and phytosanitary treatments based on natural products. This transition to more sustainable practices enables the production of wines that are more authentic and respectful of their terroir.
Burgundy PDO wines are renowned for their quality and their ability to faithfully reflect the characteristics of their terroir. Although this appellation is often seen as an introduction to Burgundy wines, many wines from this AOP rival more prestigious appellations in quality. AOP Bourgogne wines are appreciated for their accessibility, diversity and excellent value.
