AOP Menetou-Salon

The Menetou-Salon PDO is an appellation d'origine contrôlée for white, red and rosé wines produced in the Cher department of the Centre-Val de Loire region. It was recognized in 1959. The Menetou-Salon PDO production area is limited to 10 communes: Aubinges, Menetou-Salon, Morogues, Parassy, Pigny, Quantilly, Saint-Céols, Soulangis, Vignoux-sous-les-Aix and Humbligny. The vines are planted on sunny hillsides at altitudes of between 100 and 200 meters. The soil is composed of limestone, flint and clay, which gives the wines their mineral character.

The grape varieties authorized for the Menetou-Salon PDO are for white wines sauvignon and for red and rosé wines pinot noir.

The wines of Menetou-Salon PDO are characterized by their freshness and liveliness. They present aromas of citrus (grapefruit, lemon, pear), white flowers (acacia, jasmine) and red fruits (cherry, raspberry). White wines are best enjoyed young, but can also be kept for several years. Red and rosé wines are best enjoyed young, but can also be kept for a few years.

Production of Menetou-Salon PDO is around 28,500 hectolitres per year.

The maximum authorized yield is 70 hectoliters per hectare for white wines and 50 hectoliters per hectare for red and rosé wines.

The minimum alcohol content is 10.5% for white wines and 10% for red and rosé wines.

According to figures from the Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins du Centre-Loire (CIVC), the organic share of Menetou-Salon PDO is 15% in 2023. This represents around 4,275 hectolitres of wine produced organically.

This share has been steadily increasing for several years. In 2015, it was just 5%.
