AOC Côtes de Bourg

The Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Côtes de Bourg is a wine appellation located on the right bank of the Dordogne River, in the Bordeaux region. Known for its high-quality red and white wines, this appellation benefits from an exceptional terroir and a growing commitment to organic farming.

Côtes de Bourg lies around 35 kilometers north of Bordeaux, on hillsides overlooking the Dordogne and Gironde rivers. The appellation's terroir is varied, with soils composed of limestone, clay, silt and gravel. This geological diversity, combined with a temperate, oceanic climate, creates ideal conditions for growing vines.

The red wines represent the majority of Côtes de Bourg production. They are mainly made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec grapes. Merlot, dominant in the blend, brings roundness and fruitiness, while Cabernets add structure and complexity.

The red wines of Côtes de Bourg are renowned for their aromatic richness and balance. They present aromas of red fruits (cherry, raspberry), black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), as well as spicy notes and sometimes mineral touches. On the palate, they are often fleshy, with supple tannins and lovely freshness, ending with a lingering finish.

Although less well-known than the reds, Côtes de Bourg white wines are gaining in popularity. They are made mainly from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes. The appellation's white wines are fresh, lively and aromatic, with notes of citrus, exotic fruit and white flowers.

The Côtes de Bourg PDO covers around 4,000 hectares of vines. Annual production is close to 200,000 hectolitres, or around 26 million bottles. This production is carried out by around 400 winegrowers, including many family estates that perpetuate the region's winegrowing tradition.

The wines of the Côtes de Bourg are distinguished by their quality and character, reflecting the diversity of the terroirs and the expertise of the winemakers. The reds are appreciated for their ageing capacity and aromatic complexity, while the whites seduce with their freshness and finesse. Growing efforts in organic viticulture further enhance the authenticity and typicity of the appellation's wines.
