Médoc PDO

The Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Médoc is one of Bordeaux's most prestigious wine appellations, located on the left bank of the Gironde. It is renowned for its robust, complex red wines, made from a unique terroir and climate conducive to quality viticulture. With a rich history and a growing commitment to organic farming, the Médoc PDO continues to appeal to wine lovers around the world.

The Médoc stretches some 80 kilometers along the Gironde estuary, from the city of Bordeaux to the Pointe de Grave. The Médoc terroir is characterized by its gravelly soils, a mixture of pebbles, sand and clay, which provide excellent drainage and store the sun's heat, promoting optimal ripening of the grapes.

Red wines represent the bulk of Médoc production. The main grape varieties used are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and to a lesser extent, Malbec and Carménère. Cabernet Sauvignon is often the dominant grape variety, providing structure, tannins and ageing potential, while Merlot contributes roundness and aromatic richness.

The wines of Médoc are made from a wide range of grape varieties.

Medoc wines are renowned for their complexity, tannin structure and ageing potential. They present aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), cedar, tobacco, leather and spices. On the palate, they are often full-bodied, with firm tannins and balanced acidity, ending with a long, elegant finish.

The Médoc PDO covers around 5,700 hectares of vineyards. Annual production is close to 330,000 hectolitres, or around 44 million bottles. This production is carried out by more than 600 producers, including prestigious châteaux and family estates.
