The Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Irancy is a renowned appellation in the Burgundy region, located in the Yonne department, south of Auxerre. Known for its red wines made mainly from the Pinot Noir grape, Irancy offers distinctive wines full of character, often with a touch of the locally distinctive César grape.
The Irancy PDO covers around 160 hectares, spread over the hillsides of the Yonne valley. The vineyards are planted on well-exposed slopes, mainly facing south and southwest, enabling excellent ripening of the grapes. The soils are mainly Kimmeridgian limestone, typical of the neighboring Chablis region, with marl and clay, offering excellent drainage and a minerality that is reflected in the wines.
Irancy PDO wines are mainly made from the Pinot Noir grape, with the possibility of adding up to 10% César. The more rustic and tannic César brings structure and depth to the wines. Irancy wines are distinguished by their aromas of red fruits (cherry, raspberry), black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), as well as spicy notes and sometimes undergrowth. On the palate, they are generally well-structured, with fine tannins and balanced acidity, offering good length and ageing potential.
The Irancy PDO covers around 160 hectares of vineyards, with an annual production of around 6,000 hectolitres. This modest production allows winemakers to focus on quality, offering wines that faithfully reflect the appellation's unique terroir.
A growing number of Irancy winemakers are adopting organic or biodynamic viticulture practices. These practices aim to preserve the environment, enhance biodiversity and produce more authentic wines. Methods include the use of organic composts, the reduction or elimination of synthetic chemicals, and natural phytosanitary treatments to protect the vines against disease. The organic approach also helps maintain the health of the soil and vines, contributing to the quality and typicity of Irancy wines.
Irancy PDO wines are renowned for their character and typicity. The combination of the Pinot Noir and César grape varieties, unique to this region, gives the wines particular depth and complexity. The wines are appreciated for their ability to evolve favorably over time, developing more complex aromas and a harmonious texture as they age.
