Château Romanin

Le Château Romanin, located in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, is an emblematic wine estate nestled on the northern slopes of the Alpilles mountains. Covering 250 hectares, it includes 58 hectares of vines, 4 hectares of olive groves and 2.5 hectares of almond trees, cultivated with meticulous care. Founded in 1988, the estate is a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture, respecting natural cycles and the influence of the stars to produce authentic, expressive wines.

The estate takes its name from the ruins of a 13thᵉ century château, once occupied by the Templar order, which overlook the vineyards. This historic site lends the estate a mystical aura and bears witness to its rich past. In 2006, Anne-Marie and Jean-Louis Charmolüe, former owners of Château Montrose in Bordeaux, acquired Château Romanin with the ambition of perpetuating its winegrowing heritage while adding their expertise. Following Jean-Louis' death in 2018, Anne-Marie continues this mission until her own death in 2021. Since March 2024, Canadian-born Dr Carolyn Sheetz, a former maxillofacial surgeon, accompanied by her husband Stan Sheetz, has taken over the reins of the estate, injecting a new dynamic while respecting established traditions.

The Château Romanin benefits from an exceptional terroir characterized by stony clay-limestone soil and ideal exposure, favoring the cultivation of vines. The estate has been certified biodynamic since its creation, an agricultural approach that considers the farm as a living organism and integrates lunar and planetary cycles into crop management. This method excludes the use of synthetic chemicals, favoring natural preparations to enhance soil and plant vitality. The Les Baux-de-Provence PDO, to which the estate belongs, is a 100% organic appellation, reflecting Château Romanin's commitment to environmentally-friendly viticulture.

The estate produces a varied range of red, rosé and white wines, each expressing the typicity of the Alpilles terroir.

Grand Vin Rouge: Made mainly from Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is aged for 18 months in foudres and barrels, offering a complex structure with black fruit aromas and spicy notes.

La Chapelle: A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, this wine is aged in stainless steel tanks, revealing notes of garrigue and an elegance characteristic of wines from the region.

Le Cœur : From the vineyard's finest terroirs, this wine is produced only in great vintages, offering exceptional concentration of red fruit and great depth.

Grand Vin Rosé du Chateau Romanin: This rosé is made from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Counoise, offering lovely freshness with red fruit aromas and a mineral touch.

Romanin Rosé IGP Alpilles: Made from Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah, this wine has a pale color and delicate notes of red fruit and citrus, ideal for summer days.

Grand Vin Blanc: A blend of Rolle, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, this wine offers lovely aromatic complexity with floral notes and a long, elegant finish.

Romanin Blanc: Made mainly from Rolle and Grenache Blanc, this wine seduces with its freshness and aromas of citrus and white flowers.

One of the gems of Château Romanin is its cathedral cellar, an underground cellar built in 1992 by architect Serge Hennemann. This monumental Gothic-style cellar is buried beneath the rock, offering optimal conditions for maturing wines thanks to a constant temperature and controlled humidity. The architecture of the winery takes into account the roundness of the stars and the earth's magnetism, reflecting the biodynamic approach of the estate.

The Château Romanin offers guided tours of the winery and tastings of its wines and olive oils, allowing visitors to discover the history of the estate, its commitment to biodynamics and the quality of its products. Tours are available by reservation and offer a complete immersion in the world of Château Romanin.

Chateau Romanin wines have received numerous awards, testifying to their quality and excellence.
