AOC Bordeaux

The Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Bordeaux is one of France's most famous and extensive wine appellations. Located in the Bordeaux wine region, it encompasses a wide diversity of terroirs and wine styles, reflecting the richness and complexity of this iconic region. With a considerable vineyard area and a growing commitment to organic farming, AOP Bordeaux continues to produce high-quality wines that appeal to wine lovers the world over.

The Bordeaux PDO extends over the entire Bordeaux wine region, covering an area of over 110,000 hectares. It encompasses several sub-regions, including Médoc, Graves, Entre-Deux-Mers, Libournais, and Blayais-Bourg. The terroir of AOP Bordeaux is extremely varied, including gravel, clay, limestone and sand soils. This geological diversity, combined with a temperate oceanic climate, makes it possible to grow a wide variety of grape varieties and produce an extensive range of wines.

Red wines account for around 85% of Bordeaux PDO production. The main grape varieties used are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and to a lesser extent, Malbec and Carménère. Merlot is often the dominant grape, bringing roundness and richness, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and tannins. Bordeaux red wines are renowned for their aromatic complexity, balanced tannins and ageing potential. They present aromas of red and black fruits, cedar, tobacco, and sometimes spicy and mineral notes.

Bordeaux white wines are produced from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle grapes. Sauvignon Blanc brings exotic fruit and citrus aromas, good acidity and freshness. Sémillon adds roundness and floral notes, while Muscadelle contributes aromatic complexity with notes of white flowers and honey. Bordeaux white wines can be dry, mellow or sweet, offering a range of flavors from lively and fresh to rich and smooth.

.

The Bordeaux PDO also produces rosés and clairets, wines that are slightly more colorful and structured than traditional rosés. These wines are made from the same grape varieties as the red wines and feature fresh red fruit aromas, with lively acidity and a light texture.

The quality of AOP Bordeaux wines is very heterogeneous. Discover some pretty Bordeaux bio with Château les Annereaux or the château Haut-Moulin cuvée Louise!
