AOC Côtes du Forez

The AOP Côtes du Forez is one of the most confidential and singular appellations in the Loire Valley vineyards. Located in the Loire department, at the foot of the Forez mountains, it stretches around the Forez plain and the hillsides that border it. Long overshadowed by better-known wine-growing regions, the Côtes du Forez PDO is now establishing itself as an appellation of character, recognized for the purity of its wines and the unique expression of its terroirs of volcanic origin.

.

The presence of vines in Forez dates back to Gallo-Roman times. Viticulture then developed in the Middle Ages, thanks in particular to religious communities and regional trade. For centuries, Forez wines were essentially intended for local consumption. Recognition as an appellation d'origine contrôlée in 2000 marked a decisive turning point, offering the Côtes du Forez PDO new visibility and official recognition of its geological and cultural specificity.

The vineyards of AOP Côtes du Forez extend mainly over volcanic slopes derived from ancient basalt flows. These black soils, rich in minerals and highly draining, are the signature of Forez. The vines sink their roots deep into them, drawing energy and minerality from these volcanic formations, which are clearly reflected in the wines. This soil type imposes moderate yields and favors structured, precise wines with a strong identity.

The climate of the AOP Côtes du Forez is continental, with marked mountain influences. Winters are cold, summers hot, but the altitude and winds coming off the Forez mountains bring beneficial night-time coolness. These climatic conditions enable slow, balanced ripening of the grapes, preserving natural acidity and aromatic freshness, essential elements of the style of the appellation's wines.

The Gamay grape reigns supreme in the AOP Côtes du Forez. It finds a particularly pure and structured expression on these basaltic soils. Unlike the lighter expressions seen elsewhere, here Gamay du Forez develops aromatic depth and a mineral framework that give the wines great personality. Gamay represents the very essence of the appellation and its main vector of identity.

The red wines of the AOP Côtes du Forez are distinguished by their deep color and intense aromatic expression. The nose reveals notes of red and black fruits, cherry, blackberry, accompanied by spicy and sometimes smoky touches, inherited from the volcanic soils. On the palate, the attack is supple, the body dense but balanced, with fine tannins and a fresh, mineral finish. These wines combine delicacy and structure, offering great drinkability while retaining real ageing potential on certain cuvées.

Winemaking in the AOP Côtes du Forez often favors methods that respect fruit and terroir. Many estates practice fermentation with indigenous yeasts, maceration adapted to preserve the finesse of Gamay, and ageing in vats or neutral containers. The use of wood is generally moderate, so as not to mask the volcanic and mineral expression of the wines.

Organic viticulture is playing an increasingly important role in the AOP Côtes du Forez. A significant proportion of estates are now engaged in organic farming or conversion, with some even adopting biodynamic or natural practices. Working the soil, avoiding the use of herbicides and striving for a sustainable ecological balance are at the heart of the winemakers' concerns, convinced that the quality of their wines depends on the vitality of their terroirs.

This environmentally-friendly approach helps to reinforce the legibility and sincerity of the wines, while setting the appellation in a contemporary dynamic in tune with the expectations of lovers of authentic, committed wines.

At tasting, the wines of AOP Côtes du Forez seduce with their frankness and freshness. Their balanced structure and clear aromatic expression make them particularly well-suited to the table. They are the perfect accompaniment to regional charcuterie, grilled meats, simmered dishes and terroir cuisine, but can also be equally at home with more modern, spicy dishes.

Today, the AOP Côtes du Forez embodies an appellation in full assertion, driven by committed winemakers and a unique geological identity. Thanks to the singularity of its volcanic soils, the precise expression of its Gamay grapes and the marked development of organic viticulture, it offers wines that are sincere, structured and deeply rooted in their territory. This coherence and authenticity make the Côtes du Forez PDO an unmissable appellation for discovering another facet of the Loire, confidential yet resolutely expressive.
