La Sœur Cadette is an organic winery in Vézelay, Burgundy, run by the Montanet family and Valentin Montanet. Their lineup includes Chardonnays, Melons, and Pinot Noirs, vinified with native yeasts and very little sulfur.
Vézelay is one of Burgundy’s village appellations, located northwest of the Côte de Beaune. Its vineyards are rolling and well-preserved. La Sœur Cadette produces wines here that reflect the terroir: pure fruit, a briny finish, and a pleasant hint of bitterness—the signature of this corner of Burgundy.
The vines grow primarily around Vézelay, on clay-limestone soils well-suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is in this environment that crisp whites and refined reds are born.
The wines are made from organically grown grapes. Fermentation is spontaneous, using native yeasts, and sulfur additions are kept to a minimum. Aging takes place in tanks or barrels to preserve the fruit and freshness.
Vézelay whites pair well with fish, seafood, goat cheese, and cream-based poultry dishes. The reds pair well with white meats, charcuterie, and Burgundian cuisine. Serve the whites between 10 and 12 °C.
