AOC Petit Chablis

The Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Petit Chablis is one of the four appellations of the vignoble de Chablis, located in the Yonne region of Burgundy. Known for its fresh, mineral white wines, this appellation is often considered the gateway to the great wines of Chablis.

The Petit Chablis PDO covers around 1,500 hectares of vineyards, located mainly on the plateaus and upper slopes surrounding the more prestigious Chablis appellations. Petit Chablis soils are generally composed of Portlandian marl and limestone, distinct from the Kimmeridgian soils of the other Chablis appellations. These soils give the wines a marked minerality and lively acidity, characteristic of wines from this region.

AOP Petit Chablis wines are made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety. They are distinguished by their freshness, purity and minerality. Typical aromas include white-fleshed fruit (apple, pear), citrus (lemon, grapefruit), floral (white flowers) and mineral (gunflint) nuances. On the palate, the wines are lively, light and balanced, with marked acidity and a refreshing finish.

The Petit Chablis PDO covers around 1,500 hectares, with an annual production of around 80,000 hectolitres, or approximately 10.6 million bottles. This production maintains high quality while offering affordability, making it an excellent introduction to Chablis wines for amateurs and connoisseurs.

A growing number of Petit Chablis PDO producers are adopting organic or biodynamic viticulture practices. These approaches aim to respect the environment, preserve biodiversity and produce more authentic, expressive wines. Practices include the use of organic composts, the reduction or elimination of synthetic chemicals, and manual tilling of the soil. The organic approach also enhances the health of the soil and vines, contributing to the quality and typicity of Petit Chablis wines. AOP Petit Chablis wines are renowned for their freshness and minerality, offering a lighter, more accessible expression of Chablis wines. Their lively acidity and aromatic purity make them ideal for accompanying a variety of dishes, including seafood, fish and goat's cheese. Petit Chablis wines can be enjoyed young, but certain vintages can also benefit from a few years of cellaring.
