Anjou-Villages

The AOP Anjou Villages represents one of the highest quality and most distinctive expressions of Anjou red wines. Located in the heart of Anjou's vineyards, in the western part of the Loire Valley, this appellation is exclusively dedicated to red wines made from Cabernet Franc. It embodies a more demanding and structured vision of Anjou, based on rigorously selected terroirs and a viticultural approach geared towards depth and ageing potential.

.

Viticulture in Anjou dates back to antiquity, but it was from the Middle Ages onwards that the vineyards really took shape, driven by religious communities and trade along the Loire. Anjou's red wines have long been renowned for their finesse, but the emergence of the AOP Anjou Villages marks a clear desire to enhance the terroirs best suited to producing red wines of character. The appellation was officially recognized in 1991, consecrating a qualitative hierarchy within Anjou wines.

The AOP Anjou Villages vineyards extend over several communes located mainly south of the Loire, on hillsides and plateaus benefiting from favorable exposure. The soils are mainly composed of schist, ancient volcanic rock and sandstone, characteristic of the Armorican Massif. These geological formations give the wines a firm structure, a marked mineral framework and a notable capacity for ageing.

.

The climate of AOP Anjou Villages is temperate with an oceanic influence, with continental nuances. Winters are mild, summers moderate, and the proximity of the Loire River plays an essential regulatory role, limiting climatic excesses. These conditions favor the gradual ripening of Cabernet Franc, enabling optimum phenolic ripeness to be achieved while retaining freshness and balance.

Cabernet Franc is a grape variety with a long history.

Cabernet Franc is the exclusive grape variety of the AOP Anjou Villages. It finds a particularly structured and deep expression on the schistose soils of Anjou. Unlike the lighter versions seen in other areas of the Loire, Cabernet Franc d'Anjou Villages here develops an aromatic density and tannic structure that make them wines for laying down.

The red wines of the AOP Anjou Villages are characterized by a deep color and intense aromatic expression. The nose evokes black fruits, ripe cherry, blackcurrant, accompanied by spicy notes, sometimes peppery, and noble vegetal nuances. On the palate, the attack is frank, the body dense, structured by firm but well-integrated tannins. The finish is long, fresh and marked by a beautiful mineral tension.

Winemaking practices in the AOP Anjou Villages favor controlled extraction to preserve the balance and finesse of the Cabernet Franc. Maceration is often long but delicate, and aging can be carried out in vats, foudres or barrels, with a measured use of wood to support structure without overpowering fruit. This approach produces precise wines capable of evolving favorably over time.

Organic viticulture is playing an increasingly important role in the AOP Anjou Villages. Many estates have embarked on a transition to organic or biodynamic farming, convinced that respect for schist soils and vines is essential to the faithful expression of terroir. Mechanical working of the soil, limiting inputs and seeking a natural balance are now widespread practices in the appellation.

This orientation towards organic viticulture is a key factor in the development of our wines.

This move towards more environmentally-friendly viticulture helps to reinforce the legibility and sincerity of the wines, while meeting the growing expectations of committed, authentic wine lovers.

At tasting, AOP Anjou Villages wines stand out for their depth and ability to accompany the table. Their tannic structure and natural freshness make them particularly well-suited to gastronomic pairings, especially with red meats, simmered dishes, grilled meats or cuisines with character.
