AOP Gigondas in a nutshell
The Gigondas PDO is a Rhône Valley PDO that applies to wines produced in the commune of Gigondas, in the Vaucluse department. This AOC, which covers 1,233 hectares, was obtained in 1971 and produces almost exclusively reds (98%) and a few rosés (2%). The grape varieties authorized for Gigonas reds are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The soils are predominantly clay. The climate is hot and dry in summer, and fairly rainy in winter. AOC Gigondas red wines are generally deep red. They are expressive and powerful, with notes of red and black fruits, sometimes accompanied by a marked oakiness. The best Gigondas wines are those that know how to retain freshness and balance so that they can be kept for a decade or so without becoming over-oaked.
