Madiran wines are renowned for their powerful, full-bodied and complex character.
Madiran wines are made mainly from the Tannat grape, which is a red grape variety native to the southwest region of France. Tannat gives Madiran wines their robust tannic structure, as well as their dark color.
Madiran wines are often described as powerfully tannic. Tannins are present in Madiran wines because of the Tannat grape, which has a thick skin and pips, leading to a high extraction of tannins during vinification. Tannins can give Madiran wines a firm structure, with a full-bodied mouthfeel and potentially long aging capacity.
Madiran wines generally offer complex, intense aromas, with notes of black fruits such as blackberry, black cherry and plum, as well as hints of spice, leather, tobacco and cocoa. With time, Madiran wines can develop more complex aromas and evolve towards notes of undergrowth, truffle and aged leather.
Madiran wines are gradually undergoing their revolution: more fruit and suppleness, less structure, as at domaine Labranche-Laffond or Clos des Mets d'âme
