AOP Mercurey is a French wine appellation located in Burgundy, about 12 kilometers northwest of Chalon-sur-Saône. It is known for the production of red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape variety.
Mercurey is one of Burgundy's oldest appellations, with a history dating back to the 12th century. The vineyard is located on the Côte Chalonnaise, a region that enjoys a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters. The soils are mainly composed of clay and limestone, which give the wines their distinct minerality and structure.
The red wines of Mercurey PDO are generally intense ruby red in color. They present aromas of red fruits, black fruits, flowers and spices. They are powerful and full-bodied, with good acidity. They can age for many years.
