Marcel Deiss Estate

A few words about Domaine Marcel Deiss...

The Marcel Deiss estate is one of the most renowned in Alsace. Jean-Michel Deiss has chosen to highlight the terroirs of Alsace through planted vines. No single-varietal cuvées here, then, but blends of grape varieties from a very specific terroir.

The Domaine Marcel Deiss, located in Bergheim in the heart of Alsace, is a must for lovers of great white wines. Founded in 1947, this family estate is now run by Jean-Michel Deiss, a fervent advocate of biodynamic practices and the authentic expression of Alsace terroir. With a unique approach based on the concept of complantation, where several grape varieties are grown together on the same plot, Marcel Deiss produces wines of unrivalled richness and complexity. His commitment to biodynamic viticulture and deep respect for the soil make this estate a pioneer of the Alsatian revival.

The Domaine Marcel Deiss covers 32 hectares spread over a mosaic of incredibly diverse Alsatian terroirs. Each parcel is meticulously worked to reveal its unique identity. Alsace enjoys a semi-continental climate, marked by hot, dry summers and cold winters. This climate favors slow ripening of the grapes, enabling the wines to develop great aromatic complexity. The soils are extremely varied: limestone, sandstone, schist and volcanic, each contributing its own unique character to the estate's wines. This diversity enables us to produce expressive wines, marked by their minerality and depth.

Jean-Michel Deiss is one of the few winemakers to practice complantation, an ancient method of growing several grape varieties on the same plot. Unlike traditional monocépages, this approach produces wines deeply rooted in their terroir, where blending occurs naturally in the vineyard.

Guide du meilleur vin de France 2020 about Domaine Marcel Deiss: "Mathieu Deiss succeeds his father Jean-Michel at the helm of this venerable Bergheim estate. Complantation is still the guiding principle, even for the grands crus. Although the process is ancestral in the region, it remains little used and divides winegrowers sharply. The Deisses take this approach one step further, delivering convincing, complex wines with marvellous intensity of flavour and incredible balance. Mathieu has also created the Vignoble du Rêveur from his mother's vineyards in Bennwihr (where he produces top-flight orange wines). The wines are out of the ordinary for the region, which is a little disconcerting for the consumer, but the result is magnificent. A few years of hindsight allow us to analyze the precision of terroir definitions and the ability of these wines to manage their own balance. To be discovered at the estate: the unprecedented experience of geo-sensory tasting, which enables us to understand the relationship uniting the characteristics of the wine and the terroir in which it was born."

Riquewihr highlights the complexity and structure of Riquewihr's great terroirs. The nose is intense, revealing notes of yellow fruit, sweet spices and a floral touch. On the palate, it combines richness and tension, with a long, salivating finish.

The rouge de Marcel Deiss is a superb pinot noir, deep and bright: it deserves a few months' cellaring to blend in completely.
