About

The history of Clos d'Albizzi begins in extraordinary fashion in the early 16th century. Tired of the civil wars ravaging Florence, Zanobi degli Albizzi—a member of a noble and powerful Florentine dynasty, rivals of the Medici and regularly exiled by their faction—decided to flee the city. The family set sail with the intention of reaching America... but their ship ran aground off the coast of Cassis. They stayed there, and since 1523, Cassis has been their home. His son Antonio established a major vineyard there, which would become the oldest continuously operating estate in the appellation.

Today, François Dumon, a direct descendant of the Albizzi family, cultivates this 14-hectare estate—all in a single block—with the support of his daughter Marie-Laure. The vineyard, located exclusively within the Cassis appellation—one of France’s very first AOCs, recognized in 1936—rests on a limestone base of white chalk and marine marl typical of the Calanques massif. These shallow, well-drained soils force the vines to root deeply, giving the wines intense minerality and lovely tension, while the white rock promotes consistent photosynthesis while preserving valuable acidity.

In 2023, the estate celebrated 500 years of history—a half-millennium of family continuity that is extremely rare in the French wine industry.
