The Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) Listrac-Médoc is a small but prestigious appellation located on the left bank of the Gironde, in the heart of the Médoc wine region, some 40 kilometers northwest of Bordeaux. Renowned for its powerful, well-structured red wines, Listrac-Médoc benefits from a unique terroir and climate conducive to the production of high-quality wines. What's more, a growing number of estates are adopting organic and sustainable viticultural practices, reinforcing the authenticity and typicity of this appellation's wines.
Listrac-Médoc is one of the Médoc's six communal appellations, situated at a slightly higher altitude than the other surrounding communes, giving it a slightly cooler climate and ideal exposure for viticulture. Listrac-Médoc's soils are mainly composed of gravel on a limestone subsoil, as well as clay and sand. This geological diversity provides excellent drainage and adequate water retention, favoring slow, even ripening of the grapes.
Red wines make up the entire Listrac-Médoc production. The main grape varieties used are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon often dominant. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, tannins and longevity, while Merlot contributes roundness and suppleness. Petit Verdot, though a minority, adds depth of color and spicy aromas.
.Listrac-Médoc wines are renowned for their power, tannic structure and ageing potential. They present aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), tobacco, cedar, as well as spicy and sometimes mineral notes. On the palate, they are full-bodied, with firm tannins and well-balanced acidity, ending with a long finish.
The Listrac-Médoc PDO covers around 660 hectares of vines. Annual production is around 32,000 hectolitres, or around 4 million bottles. This production is carried out by around 90 winegrowers, ranging from small family estates to larger estates.
