Domaine Sainte Barbe

The Domaine Sainte-Barbe in a few words...

Jean Marie Chaland of the domaine de Sainte-Barbe owns a 9-hectare vineyard of Chardonnay grapes in the villages of Viré and Montbellet. This organic Mâconnais estate is divided into 23 parcels over three appellations: Viré-Clessé (5.7 ha), Mâcon-Villages (2 ha) and Mâcon (0.5 ha).

The estate has been certified organic since 2003. The average age of the vines is 50 years, a very respectable age for Chardonnay. The slopes of Domaine Sainte Barbe face south-east and benefit from the microclimate of the Saône Valley. The soils, marly-limestone , are mostly derived from the degradation of Bathonian oolitic limestone rocks.

Vinification is carried out using only indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged either in vats or in barrels, depending on the cuvée.

The Sainte-Barbe estate produces around 50,000 bottles of organic white wines each year, offering excellent value for money.

The Domaine Sainte Barbe cuvées

The Macon-Village du domaine Sainte-Barbe, les Tilles, is superb value for money. This Chardonnay is elegant and slender. A magnificent bottle to drink young.

The Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes domaine Sainte-Barbe is an excellent, affordable Burgundy. The wine, aged in vats, is beautifully defined with notes of white flowers and hazelnut. It has an ageing potential of around ten years. With this 2010 cuvée, Jean-Marie Chaland produces one of the most successful wines since the creation of Domaine Sainte-Barbe.

L'Epinet is a cuvée from very old 65-year-old vines facing south-east. The vines produce little but a great wine! Full-bodied, round and elegant on the palate, with notes of yellow fruit, mango and apricot. Drink over 5-7 years.

Thurissey is the grand cuvée of Domaine Sainte-Barbe: long, mineral, possessing a lovely chewiness, this organic wine is one of the very pretty Chardonnays of the Côte mâconnaise.

The Domaine Sainte-Barbe recently took over old Gamay vines in the Maconnais region. As a result, it produces a magnificent red Macon, all elegance and freshness, a superb success for the first vintage.
