The name Cheval en Tête is a playful nod to the central role the horse plays at Domaine Cosse et Maisonneuve, which owns five of them—a play on words between the horse in the minds of winemakers Matthieu Cosse and Catherine Maisonneuve, and the horse “in the lead,” like a true top-tier cuvée that’s unbeatable in terms of value for money.
The estate was founded in 1999 when two talented winemakers met: Matthieu Cosse, a graduate of the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology, and Catherine Maisonneuve, who holds a BTS in viticulture and oenology from Blanquefort. Together, they took over a vineyard of old Malbec vines in Prayssac, not far from Cahors, with the ambition of moving beyond the rustic image long associated with this appellation. Their very first vintage, Les Laquets, paved the way for a range of distinct terroirs, now cultivated biodynamically across 17 hectares.
For Catherine Maisonneuve, “wine is the ambassador of a terroir, and the winemaker its interpreter”—a philosophy that has made the estate one of the leading lights of Cahors’s quality renaissance, where Malbec has regained its full nobility, far removed from the excessive extractions of the past.
