Cuvée Navis is a superb Languedoc organic wine. Made for ageing, this cuvée develops on the nose with notes of morello cherries, blackberry and white pepper. On the palate, silky tannins give way to notes of fresh black fruit and sweet spices. Superb length.
Lionel Maurel, of Mas d'Agalis—whose name means “diagonally, askew” in Occitan—represents the fourth generation of a family of winemakers based in Nébian, in the Hérault department, 40 km northwest of Montpellier. Before striking out on his own, he honed his craft at several renowned estates, including that of Léon Barral, a leading figure in Languedoc’s natural wine movement.
On his biodynamically farmed plots, planted with Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre on stony terraces dating back to the Villafranchian period, Lionel Maurel works without any synthetic chemicals—plowing the soil, using organic manure, and applying a few measured treatments with copper and sulfur—so that the terroir can fully express itself from one vintage to the next.
Navis is made from grapes sorted cluster by cluster, destemmed, and then macerated for about three weeks. Only the free-run juice—more elegant than the pressed juice—is selected for this cuvée, which is then aged for 10 months in 500-liter barrels. Lionel Maurel himself considers this cuvée to be among his most successful wines.
