Winemakers from father to son since 1880, Estelle and Baptiste Philippe represent the fifth generation to carry on the legacy of Domaine de la Verpaille, located in the heart of the Viré-Clessé appellation in Southern Burgundy. Baptiste took over the family estate in 2004, with the goal of revealing the full complexity of this terroir through his various vintages. Beginning in 2006, the couple began converting the entire vineyard to organic farming—certification was obtained for the 2009 harvest.
The estate now spans 20 hectares, spread across four prestigious appellations: Viré-Clessé, Mâcon-Villages, Mâcon, and Bourgogne. Their philosophy can be summed up in one phrase: “organic farming to reveal our terroirs”—a focus on balanced, living soils; controlled plowing and natural grass cover; and limited use of sulfur and copper to restore the vines’ natural defenses. In the cellar, the couple maintains a low profile, allowing the wine time to fully express itself. A family-owned estate that, over the past two decades, has established itself as a benchmark for organic Chardonnay from the Mâconnais region.
