There are Beaujolais Nouveaux that we drink out of tradition, and others that we look forward to every year. The one from Domaine Romany belongs to the second category: a Gamay from old vines, vinified by a young couple of winemakers who have chosen to prioritize terroir over folklore.
Domaine Romany
Aurélie and Fabien Romany run this family-owned estate in Bully, about thirty kilometers north of Lyon. For decades, the grapes were delivered to the cooperative winery. Fabien, who trained in viticulture and oenology, produced the estate’s first vintages in 2019. The Gamay vines have been certified organic since 2013. The oldest plot was planted in 1918, and most of the vineyard dates from the 1950s and 1960s, using mass selection.
Terroir
The vineyards stretch across Bully, Sarcey, and Saint-Germain-Nuelles, on south- and southeast-facing slopes at altitudes ranging from 270 to 420 meters. Gamay grows here on granitic soils and volcanic blue stone, which give the wine its distinct fruitiness and freshness.
Grape Variety and Winemaking
100% Gamay, hand-harvested. Winemaking involves minimal intervention: the work begins in the vineyard to ensure healthy, ripe grapes are brought in, requiring minimal intervention in the cellar.
Tasting notes for the 2026
[To be completed after tasting: color, nose, palate, finish.] The estate’s signature style features a floral nose, a juicy palate with notes of red currant and raspberry, and a fresh finish. Serve between 12 and 14 °C. Best enjoyed within six months.
