"Excellence depends on people, the soil, the climate, and the grape variety. Whether in the vineyard or in the cellar, our approach is rooted in an ideal of purity, authenticity, and respect for the elements. The more we respect the soil and the grapes, the more the terroir can express itself, and the less intervention is needed in the cellar." — Domaine Marcel Lapierre.

Morgon is the founding and iconic cuvée of Domaine Marcel Lapierre — the one that established the estate’s global reputation and revolutionized perceptions of Beaujolais. This 2025 magnum represents its most noble form: the 1.5-liter format, which slows and harmonizes the wine’s aging process thanks to the lower ratio of wine volume to the surface area of the cork exposed to oxidation. A magnum of Morgon Lapierre is a gift, an investment in pleasure, a bottle for special occasions.

Domaine Marcel Lapierre was founded in 1909 and is now run by Mathieu and Camille Lapierre—the son and daughter of Marcel, the undisputed pioneer of natural wine in Beaujolais. It was in 1981, under the guidance of researcher Jules Chauvet, that Marcel Lapierre abandoned sulfur, commercial yeast, and chemical fertilizers—long before these practices became a global trend. The estate is certified Organic by Ecocert AB. 18 hectares of white-juiced black Gamay in Villié-Morgon.

Morgon is made from the estate’s highest-quality plots—Côte du Py, Corcelette, and Montplain—on soils of weathered pink granite and decomposed schist. This "roche pourrie" (weathered rock), typical of Morgon, gives the Gamay a structure, minerality, and depth found in no other Beaujolais cru. The vines are on average 70 years old, trained in the gobelet style at 10,000 vines per hectare, with no irrigation. The harvest is entirely manual, with meticulous sorting of the berries both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Vinification is carried out without any addition of SO2 or commercial yeasts—spontaneous fermentation using exclusively indigenous yeasts, traditional Beaujolais semi-carbonic maceration lasting 10 to 21 days depending on the vintage. Aging takes place for 9 months in 228-liter old oak barrels—no new wood is used so as not to overpower the Gamay. Bottled unfiltered. The cuvée is lightly sulfited before bottling to protect the wine during transport.

The magnum format offers considerable advantages for Morgon Lapierre. Aging is slower and more harmonious—the wine evolves in a perfect balance between gradual oxidation and the preservation of fruit. The tannins soften more gently, the aromatic complexity develops with greater precision, and the freshness lasts longer. A magnum of Morgon Lapierre opened after 5 to 8 years will often be superior to the same wine in standard bottle size—more integrated, deeper, and more elegant.

The 2025 boasts a brilliant ruby color with characteristic violet highlights. The nose is vibrant—ripe cherry, violet, raspberry, licorice, and smoky granite. The palate is full-bodied yet displays a disconcerting fluidity and freshness, carried by round, silky tannins that never constrain the wine. The finish is long, mineral, and persistent. "The power and finesse of Gamay in a very fresh vintage." A wine with great aging potential in this noble format.

Serve at 16–17°C; decant for 1 hour. Pairings: free-range poultry, duck with cherries, Lyon-style charcuterie, aged cheeses. Aging potential: 12 to 15 years in magnum.
