Apremont PDO

The AOP Apremont constitutes one of the most emblematic appellations of the Savoyard vineyards and one of the purest expressions of French alpine viticulture. Located at the foot of the Chartreuse massif, in the Isère valley, Apremont PDO embodies a singular vision of white wine, based on freshness, minerality and a deep connection between the Jacquère grape and its terroir of origin. Long associated with simple, light wines, the AOP Apremont has been undergoing a genuine qualitative revival for several years, driven by committed winemakers and an increased focus on cultivation practices, particularly organic.

The winegrowing history of Apremont is inextricably linked to the historic landslide of Mont Granier in 1248, a major geological event that durably shaped the appellation's landscape and soils. This colossal collapse covered the valley with limestone deposits and scree, creating a unique terroir that is particularly favorable to vine-growing. It is on these young, poor, highly draining soils that Apremont's vineyards have developed over the centuries, giving rise to wines with a distinctive profile.

.

The AOP Apremont is exclusively dedicated to the production of white wines made from the Jacquère grape variety. An autochthonous Savoy grape variety, Jacquère is perfectly adapted to Alpine climatic conditions. Naturally low in alcohol and endowed with marked acidity, it enables the production of highly drinkable wines, but also, when yields are controlled, more complex and structured cuvées capable of expressing their origin with finesse.

The AOP Apremont vineyards extend mainly over the communes of Apremont and Myans, on slopes at altitudes of between 250 and 400 meters. The vines benefit from favorable exposures, often facing south and southeast, which ensure optimal ripening of the grapes despite a marked mountain climate. The altitude and proximity of the Alpine massifs play an essential role in preserving the freshness and tension of the wines.

The soils of AOP Apremont are composed mainly of limestone scree from the Mont Granier landslide, mixed with clay and alluvium. This highly draining structure limits vine vigor and favors natural aromatic concentration. The characteristic minerality of Apremont wines stems from this limestone richness, which gives the cuvées a saline, crystalline finish.

The climate of AOP Apremont is continental with alpine influence. Winters are cold and sometimes harsh, while summers remain temperate, with cool nights that slow ripening and preserve the grapes' natural acidity. Regular winds and low humidity limit disease pressure, offering favorable conditions for organic viticulture.

Organic viticulture.

Organic viticulture is playing an increasingly important role in the AOP Apremont. Many estates have undertaken a conversion to organic farming or work according to demanding agroecological principles. The mechanical working of the soil, the drastic reduction in synthetic inputs and the search for a natural balance in the vines enable us to better express the typicality of the Jacquère grape and the singularity of the limestone scree terroirs.

In the cellar, vinification favors simplicity and precision. Fermentations are mostly conducted in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic freshness and fruit purity. Some producers opt for aging on fine lees, sometimes for extended periods, to bring more texture and complexity to the wines, without ever altering their lively, airy character.

.

The wines of AOP Apremont are distinguished by a pale color with green or silver highlights. The nose opens with delicate aromas of white flowers, pear, green apple, citrus and mineral notes evoking wet stone. On the palate, the attack is lively and straightforward, carried by refreshing acidity and a light to medium structure. The finish, often saline, prolongs the sensation of purity and cleanliness.

.

The AOP Apremont is traditionally appreciated for its great aptitude for simple, precise gastronomic pairings. It is the perfect accompaniment to lake fish, seafood, fine charcuterie, lightly matured Savoyard cheeses and vegetal cuisines. Its freshness also makes it a popular aperitif wine, while retaining a true terroir dimension.

The AOP Apremont today embodies the qualitative revival of Savoy wines. Through the Jacquère grape variety, it offers crystal-clear white wines, marked by Alpine freshness and a distinctive minerality. Driven by viticultural practices that are increasingly respectful of the environment and by an assertive desire to move upmarket, Apremont PDO is asserting itself as a must-have appellation for those wishing to discover the purest and most contemporary expression of Savoyard vineyards.

Domaine Giachino Vin de Savoie - Apremont 2024

This Apremont from domaine Giachino possesses a magnificent mineral and fruity nose: a real breath of fresh air. The palate is initially explosive, lively and lemony; this organic Savoy wine has great substance and develops on notes of bergamot, pineapple and elderberry. A magnificent wine with traditional Savoy dishes, but don't hesitate to enjoy it with seafood like a pan-fried langoustine, for example.
